Aereo was a 2012 startup founded by Chet Kanojia that rented subscribers dime-sized TV antennas stored in warehouses, streaming live over-the-air television to their phones and computers for $8 a month. Broadcasters sued, and in June 2014 the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 6-3 that Aereo was effectively a cable company violating copyright law. Aereo suspended service within days and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy that November.

Final Lesson
Aereo's technology worked and customers loved it — the law killed it anyway. Never build a business whose survival depends on winning a court case.
