No product-market fit

Contributor explanation

Artifact launched in early 2023 as an AI-driven news app that learned what each reader liked and recommended articles. Over the year it added AI article summaries, in-app comments, a way to flag clickbait headlines and rewrite them with AI, link sharing, and a Twitter-like posts feature. On January 12, 2024, CEO Kevin Systrom announced the app was winding down. In his post he wrote that the team had "built something that a core group of users love, but we have concluded that the market opportunity isn't big enough to warrant continued investment in this way." The team of 8 immediately removed new comments and posts, which needed moderation staff the company would no longer have, and kept news reading running through the end of February 2024. Systrom argued that making the tough call early was better than ignoring the reality, since the bigger cost was time not spent on ideas that could reach many millions of people. In April 2024, Yahoo acquired Artifact's technology and said it would fold the AI recommendation engine into its news sites; financial terms weren't disclosed. Details: Founded by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger (Instagram co-founders); team of 8; launched early 2023; wind-down announced January 12, 2024; app reading features ended end of February 2024; technology acquired by Yahoo April 2, 2024 (terms undisclosed). Final Lesson

A product a small core of users loves still isn't a business if the market is too small, and Artifact's founders chose to shut down early rather than spend more time on it. Social features like comments and posts also carry moderation costs that a small team has to plan for.
