Shyp was an on-demand shipping startup that let customers photograph an item and have someone pick it up, package it, and ship it for them.
Cause of Death
Flawed business model
Contributor explanation
Shyp made shipping incredibly convenient, but convenience came at a huge cost. The company had to pay for couriers, packaging, warehouses, and logistics while keeping prices low enough for consumers to actually use the service. Instead of proving the economics first, Shyp expanded rapidly into new cities and continued supporting parts of the business that were popular but unprofitable. It eventually found a more promising market serving small businesses and online sellers, but the pivot came too late and the company ran out of runway.
Final Lesson
Don't scale a business model before proving the unit economics work. Growth can make a broken model look successful for a while, but it also makes the losses grow faster.
