Convoy was a Seattle digital freight broker co-founded in 2015 by Amazon veterans Dan Lewis and Grant Goodale, using an Uber-like system to match truckers with shippers. Backed by Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates, it raised $928 million in equity and venture debt and was valued at $3.8 billion after a $260 million round in April 2022. Eighteen months later, after a four-month search for a buyer failed, it shut down its core operations on October 19, 2023, and Flexport bought its technology stack weeks later.
Cause of Death
Timing or market conditions
Contributor explanation
A freight recession and tighter capital markets hit before it could reach profitable scale
Final Lesson
Convoy's technology was good enough that a rival bought it, but the business never reached the scale needed to turn a profit and still relied on outside funding. If your model needs the next round to survive, a downturn can shut out investors and buyers at the same time.
